CMAP is airing a delightful new kid’s program out of Monterey entitled Lizard Soup. Host Nancy Raven leads a live studio audience through a fun mix of story time, sing-a-longs and special guest performers. I just caught the March/April episode, and I’m happy to report that there’s still time to see it this Saturday at 11 a.m. on Cable Channel 20.
The March/April episode highlights the different holidays in these months, as well as some of the cultural traditions that take place during this time.
Nancy talks about St. Patty’s Day, International Women’s Day and Mardi Gras. She introduces kids to the fine art of playing the washboard, and sings songs about potatoes to go along with the St. Patty’s theme. I think my favorite part of the show was when her special guest, Ann Downs, entertained the kids with her mandolin playing, while Nancy made the clogging doll dance to the music. It’s a far cry from mind numbing video games, let me tell you. I enjoyed seeing the delight on the kids’ faces. It was clear they had never seen such a doll before.
I was happy to hear her introduce the kids to Harriet Tubman and her underground railroad, in honor of International Women’s Day. The kids participate in a song Nancy sings by playing shakers and flutes in the audience. They also learn how rice grows, as rice is planted during these months in China. I can’t believe Nancy can fit all of this in a 30-minute program, but she manages to!
Raven has been performing as a children’s singer/songwriter for many, many years on the Central Coast. She’s also been on the coffee shop circuit performing her music in Monterey. It’s easy to see that she has a way with kids, and can not only entertain them with her music, but teach them as well.
Lizard Soup airs regularly on CMAP, so just check our Web site for airtimes at www.mycmap.org. Each episode focuses on the holidays and traditions of the current month, so be sure not to miss it!
I’ve received lots of feedback about viewers not being able to see what’s on our channels. Because our airtimes aren’t “regular,” like broadcast channels, we can’t be listed like broadcast channels in the newspaper. The only resource we’ve been able to offer the community is our Web site, which seems to have been fairly effective.
Well, I have some good news for our viewers! Thanks to the hard work and diligence of our friends at Charter Communications, digital cable subscribers will be able to hit the “guide” button, and just like all the other channels, you’ll be able to see what’s on CMAP’s four channels! Give us a couple of weeks to get the bugs worked out, and our channels will be posted. Thanks to those viewers who have been giving us feedback about our programming schedules; and many thanks to the folks at Charter for responding so quickly to this issue. Keep your eyes peeled on the “guide.”
