The California Highway Patrol will be holding a free child safety seat inspection Saturday to kick off National Safe Kids Week.

The CHP, working with the Safe Kids Coalition, will conduct the inspection at the Kmart parking lot from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., according to a CHP-issued statement.

Certified child passenger safety technicians will be on hand to check for proper installation and provide instruction and education to parents and caregivers as to the proper methods of installation and use, according to the statement.

The CHP held a check up in February and out of 93 seats checked only 10 were installed correctly, exceeding a 90 percent rate of misuse, the statement said.

Any violations observed will be corrected without any kind of enforcement, CHP Officer Terry Mayes has said.

“Our primary goal is to educate the public,” Mayes has said. “We’re there to provide service and free assistance.”

The public is encouraged to make an appointment to

minimize wait times. For more information or to make a reservation, call the CHP toll free at 1-800-502-5058.
