Dear Editor:

Although I live here and have always monitored the Independence Rally closely, this was the first year I went downtown. I went Saturday and Sunday and enjoyed it until the crowds got too “tight.” The hard working people who put on this event are to be commended for the efforts they put into providing brochures, toilet facilities, and refuse stations. They did an outstanding job! Sorry, to see there wasn’t more reporting on the Vietnam moving wall. It was very impressive. I went twice.

Police presence was good, and I only heard one complaint about it being too much. Personally, I don’t think so and when the police were grouped it was out of sight of the general public.

I do have one major complaint to make about a couple of Alcoholic Beverage Control officers who tried to intimidate one booth operator into closing on Sunday because they were giving away pocket knives. They weren’t even selling anything! The ABC officers drew a large crowd in a matter of a few seconds and decided to wisely retreat since their coercion wasn’t working. The ironic thing is that this booth was promoting a law firm who represents injured motorcyclists.

This was the only negative thing I witnessed at the event, otherwise my friends and I enjoyed it and spent more money than we intended to.

Hollister
