The San Benito Babe 13-year-old All-Star team was defeated 4-2 by Manteca in Stockton on Thursday in District 1 action.

San Benito’s first loss in three games pits them against Bel Passi tonight. San Benito outhit Manteca 10-5 but was able to plate just two of its 15 runners. After giving up two runs in the first, San Benito battled back with runs in the first and fifth innings.

In the first inning, Brett Furtado scored on a dropped ball in left field hit by Lance Villasenor. The ball probably would have been deep enough to get the run in even if it wasn’t dropped.

In the fifth inning with the bases loaded, the third baseman made an error that allowed the second run to score.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, San Benito had a good chance to win with two out and a runner on third base. But a ball that appeared to have bounced on the plate was called fair, and the shortstop made the play to send the game to extra innings.

In the eighth, San Benito again had the chance to get out of the inning, but a throw from the third baseman to the catcher hit the runner in the head, allowing the runner to score.

“We can’t point at one play because we had plenty of opportunities to score,” said manager Steve Ferranti.

Furtado pitched the first four innings, and Jacob Eichhorn closed out the game. Both Furtado and Anthony Alvarez went 2-for-4 for San Benito.
