Only one of the four Hollister Bulldog Boxing Club athletes who went to Madera this weekend walked away with a victory.
There was one match that could have gone either way, a loss and a no-show.
Freddie Martinez, 15, defeated Scott Martin from Modesto PAL. Martinez landed a couple nice body shots in the first round and was ahead the whole time.
“The other kid was shorter and stockier,” said Bulldog instructor Zeke Lopez. “He wanted to keep moving, but Freddie has quick hands and quick feet.”
Martinez, 11-7, switched to leading with his left hand midway through the bout, something Lopez was trying to teach his fighters.
“It was hard because I am right handed,” Martinez said. “Sometimes you can get confused.”
Tony Correalas, 13, lost a close decision to Jose Mandragon, who he had defeated previously by the closest of margins. Correalas is now 9-2.
“In their first meeting, they were both trading punches,” Lopez said. “Tony was in better shape and should have won this one. The judge was falling asleep during the bout. The kid kept moving away from Tony the whole time.”
Rookie boxer Carlos Vargas, 12, fell to 1-1 after a loss to Jovanni Gomez from Mendota Boxing Club. Gomez was a year older and had a little more experience, Lopez said.
“The first couple rounds were pretty even, but then he (Vargas) started to slow down,” Lopez said.
“He kept hitting me his wild punches,” Vargas said.
Bryan Lopez, 14, was also scheduled to box in Madera, but his boxer from Sanger PAL
didn’t show up.
