Salinas – Holding off a determined Salinas rally in the final quarter, the visiting San Benito High boys water polo team edged the Cowboys 8-7 in Tri-County Athletic League play on Thursday to remain undefeated this season.
Led by Haybaler senior Lucas Zepeda’s five goals, San Benito led 7-4 going into the fourth period before Salinas rallied to within a goal before the final horn. The Balers improved to 2-0 in league and 5-0 overall this season.
Baler coach Tom Agan said the victory was a hard-fought battle.
“Salinas did come back on us a little but we held on,” Agan said. “But I’m fairly happy with our performance. playing in their pool is tough. It was a tight game. We needed (the victory).”
After ending the first period in a 2-2 tie, the Balers took a 4-2 lead into halftime.
San Benito’s Zach Bainter added a pair of goals, while David Smith had a single goal for the Balers.
This weekend, the Balers play in the prestigious Menlo Tournament at Burlingame.
