Hollister – City workers closed one block of traffic in the westbound lane of Fourth Street Thursday after a water line located about 100 feet from the corner of Fourth and Monterey streets ruptured Wednesday afternoon.
The line, which broke because it was old, was probably installed sometime in the 1960s and ruptured around 4:30pm, said Mark Clifford, utilities supervisor for the city’s public works department.
Public works employees were able to get the water turned off less than two hours later, Clifford said.
About 3,000 gallons of water soaked the ground near the broken line and ran down the gutter, but didn’t flood the road at all, Clifford said.
“That’s not a lot – the average household uses that in less than 10 days,” he said.
Workers waited until the majority of the morning traffic rush was over and blocked off the road around 9am, Clifford said.
The broken line didn’t cause any damage to city streets or buildings in the area and caused minimal subterranean damage, Clifford said. City workers had the line repaired, buried and everything cleaned up around 6:30pm Thursday.
