I am writing this letter to clarify some statements and figures that were listed in the article “Money Race: in the Oct. 14 issue of the Free Lance. I am the treasurer for the Committee To Elect Anthony Freitas Supervisor and feel that some things should be addressed.
People of all backgrounds donate to our campaign because they believe in our political objective – to elect Anthony Freitas supervisor for District 2. Basically, votes are not for sale; contributions are provided to finance a very important election for District 2, of which I am a resident. Without question, it takes money to finance any campaign.
I feel people should be made aware that Mr. Freitas was involved in a primary and now a general election. Mr. Freitas had contributions of $21,324.92 and expenses of $21,090.98 in the primary election. He has had contributions of $7,670 and expenses of $4888.78 for the general election.
The article also contained an incorrect statement about donations from the Operating Engineers Local 3. There was only one check that was received from them in the amount of $1000 and that was on Feb. 17.
I feel it is the greatest form of flattery and support when someone steps up to the plate and wants to donate more than $99 to Mr. Freitas’ campaign. Money is hard earned and I feel it speaks as a great endorsement when people voice their choices and want their names to be part of the public record. It in no way means or suggests that anything under handed or any form of a favor will ever be conducted towards that individual.
I have been involved in numerous political campaigns throughout the years and I have never known of a candidate who would only accept funds from supporters, up to $99. The exceptions to this have been local candidates who will take no contributions. Mr. Freitas has only received 26 donations over $100. All the others have been for $99 or less. Each donation has been accepted by Mr. Freitas.
With heart felt thanks – he feels honored that people are supporting him in his campaign for supervisor of District 2.
