My wife was a laboratory technician performing precursor research on DNA and mice stem cells when she put me through college in the 1960’s. The technology advanced to research with human stem cells during the 1990s. The potential benefits are enormous.
When the Bush administration started funding stem cell research on humans, the demand for stem cells soon exceeded the supply. The research laboratories needed a supply more reliable than the source controlled by natural events.
The technique for generating stem cells from animals in the laboratory could be expanded to generating stem cells from humans.
Here is the source of the controversy. Should the Federal government or the State of California fund the harvesting of human embryo? In my opinion, an emphatic no.
Stem cell research, yes. Generating babies in a test tube for harvesting, no.
