In a world of high competitiveness, it is refreshing to learn of people who put other people’s welfare first.

Two such people, Dee Hone and Gary Goularte, will be honored as Woman and Man of the Year at the San Benito County Chamber of Commerce’s annual Recognition Night on Saturday at San Juan Oaks.

Hone’s many friends know her as a quietly whirring dynamo who gladly embraces any chore that requires energy and persistence to bring it to a successful conclusion.

Her enthusiasm is contagious and people who work with her on any project remember it with pleasure and a sense of accomplishment.

Goularte has earned a reputation as a man who tackles challenges that can be intimidating to most people. But if he had any doubts about whipping them it is masked by his air of quiet confidence.

Much of his effort has been directed to the youngsters of the community and they – and the community – are better for it.

Three businesses – KS Market, Round Table Pizza and Pride of San Juan – have been selected as Retail, Hospitality-Service and Manufacturing-Agricultural businesses of the year, respectively.

Those honors are not lightly given and many people and businesses are nominated each year.

The winners are often hard to select from a field of many nominated, but those ultimately chosen are people and businesses whose hallmark is excellence.

While we are presenting laurels, let us not overlook the county Chamber of Commerce itself, a vital force in the community for three-quarters of a century.

Its leaders and board members during the years reads like a Who’s Who of local champions.

And last but not least in our affection, a nod to the persons charged with the daily operation of the Chamber office, Theresa Kiernan, executive director, Lynda Pettibone-Smith and Sharlene Van Rooy.

To everyone concerned, congratulations for another great year in San Benito County.
