With his team bitten by the flu bug and on the road, Hollister High golf coach Mitch Thomas wasn’t too down with the Balers’ second place finish in Monday’s three-team Tri-County Athletic League match at Corral De Tierra Country Club in Salinas.

Salinas won with a total of 151, while the first place Balers totaled 156. North Salinas was back a little with a 169.

“We were missing Zach Zgragen, who was sick, and some of the boys weren’t feeling too good, either,” said Thomas, who was under the weather himself. “It was Salinas’ home track and as long as we don’t finish third, that’s all I can ask.”

Four Balers shot 3-over-par 39s – Ian Hudson, Matt Lopez, Chris Zubiaga and John Dempsey. Daniel Rivera had a 42 as Hollister went with just five players.

The Balers are in a big match Wednesday as they take on Gilroy and Palma at Eagle Ridge CC. That match could have a say in the final team standings, though there is a lot of golf yet to play.

The T-CAL tournament is slated for April 29 at Quail Lodge in Carmel Valley.
