Youths of all ages who are interested in learning how to care for their pets are invited to the San Benito County 4-H program’s Small Animal Field Day Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at Bolado Park.

The event is free and designed to teach youths the care and handling of rabbits, guinea pigs, poultry and dogs. Experts on each species will be on hand to answer questions. A complimentary barbecue will follow.

4-H offers projects that teach members the proper way to care for small and large animals that are legal to own inside the city limits. But before committing to any one species, 4-H officials advise prospective pet owners to learn more about it.

Many people who would like to own a pet find that a horse or a cow is too large for their back yard, so they come to the local 4-H office looking for ideas, 4-H member Ryan Coates said.

4-H is a youth program overseen by the University of California Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources. It has been in operation for more than 100 years.

Anybody interested in the field day or the 4-H program should call the local University of California Cooperative Extension office at 637-5346.
