The Hollister Free Lance was honored with four awards, including front page, during the 115th annual California Newspaper Publishers Association’s Better Newspapers Contest for 2002 Saturday in San Francisco.

A blue-ribbon panel of judges awarded the Free Lance with second place for front page, opinion pages, arts and entertainment coverage and sports story in the 10,000-and-under circulation category.

Assistant Editor Jed Logan received the award for arts and entertainment coverage and Sports Editor John Reid received the second-place honor for sports story.

“We are all proud of the staff of the Hollister Free Lance for being recognized by the state press association with journalism awards in four separate daily newspaper categories,” said South Valley Newspapers group publisher Bill Barry. “This speaks of the teamwork involved each day to create a better newspaper.

“Congratulations to everyone on the Free Lance news team.”

Nearly 400 entries from 141 weekly and daily newspapers from across the state were chosen as winners out of more than 3,500 total contest entries.

“Prestigious awards such as these are recognition of outstanding work by Free Lance journalists, but they also reflect the tremendous support from our community,” said Mike Fitzgerald, associate publisher and executive editor.

The Free Lance’s sister paper, The Dispatch in Gilroy, earned eight awards in the same circulation category, including first-place awards in editorial comment, lifestyle coverage, arts and entertainment coverage, local spot news and columns and commentaries.

The Morgan Hill Times, another sister publication, won four awards in the weekly category, including the highest honor of first place in general excellence. The Times also received a first in local spot news and second-place awards in editorial comment and photo essay.

The contest features three divisions – daily, weekly and college – with multiple circulation levels within each category of the daily and weekly divisions.

Also, the Santa Cruz Good Times, a weekly publication in the South Valley Newspapers group, earned two awards, first place in business and financial story and a second place for public service

The Free Lance is owned by Pacific-Sierra Publishing, the parent company of The Dispatch, Morgan Hill Times and Good Times.
