Children’s book drive:

Girl Scout Troop No. 3473 of San Juan Bautista will hold a children’s book drive during the month of July to benefit San Juan preschools and day cares, San Juan School and city libraries.

The scouts will be accepting gently used picture books and children’s magazines Mondays and Wednesdays throughout July from 1:30-3 p.m. at the San Juan Bautista City Library

library book sale:

Friends of the Library is having a book sale Saturday, July 26, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. by the courtyard and shed behind the library at 470 Fifth St. New and used books are for sale for every interest area and reading level. Donated books are appreciated also. Please bring them to the front desk clerk and say they are for the “Friends Book sale,” which is held each month. For information, call 636-4107.

Art and healing:

Galeria Tonantzin will hold an Art and Healing exhibit for the month of July. The gallery is on Third Street in San Juan Bautista. Details: 623-2783

Dance Live:

The YMCA of San Benito County and the San Benito County Prevention Coalition are sponsoring Dance Live, a summer dance program for middle and high school students. The program, which will be held every Tuesday and Thursday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the YMCA at 339 Fifth St. in Hollister. Youths will learn hip-hop, jazz, salsa and other dance styles. They wil also be taught choreogrophy, basic dance moves and theory. At the end of the program, youths will perform their routines for family and friends.

The program is free and youths can sign up on a first come, first serserve basis, for more information, call 637-8600.

Kids at the Park:

The 10th annual Kids at the Park will be held Wednesday, Aug. 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Dunne Park (West Street between Sixth and Seventh streets). The event is free and open to the public. There will be free fingerprinting, face painting and healthy snacks. Children can meet the Tooth Fairy, Smokey the Bear and McGruff. The event is organized by the San Benito County Safe Kids Coalition and sponsored by the SBC Health and Human Services Agency and Public Health Services. For more information, call 637-5367.

YMCA Charity Golf:

The YMCA’s Fifth Annual Charity Golf Tournament will be held Aug. 22 at San Juan Oaks Golf Club. Cost is $150 per golfer which includes green fee, cart, range balls, box lunch, dinner and prizes. Check-in time is 8:30 a.m. with a shot-gun start at noon. Entries must be received by Aug. 15. All proceeds will benefit the YMCA of San Benito County. For information, call 637-8600.

Monterey Jazz Festival Tickets on sale:

Tickets for the 46th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival are on sale and going fast. Tickets for the jazz festival which will be from Sept. 19 to 21, run from $25 for Ground tickets, which provide access to five stages of continuous music, to $155 for an Arena package which provides reserved seating for the main stage concerts, all other concert stages set up throughout the Monterey County Fairgrounds and the jazz theater. Hollister Rec Classes:

The Hollister Recreation Division is offering monthly classes and programs in the following areas: pakua kickboxing, pakua slow movement, women’s self defense, including intermediate karate, dance, creative cartooning, aerobics, Latin ballroom dance, adult golf and time bowling. Kids and Adults Craft Classes:

The YMCA of San Benito County is offering craft classes for kids and adults. Classes will be grouped for ages 6-8, 9-11, 12-18 and adult. “Crafty Kids” classes are offered weekdays and Saturdays and “Crafty Adults” classes during the day and on Wednesday evenings. San Juan Library Story Time:

Story-teller Adele Pimentel will present story time for pre-schoolers at the San Juan Bautista Library on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. and every other Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the library, 801 Second St. Pimentel uses puppetry and songs in her stories. Bilingual Story Time:

The San Benito County Free Library holds Bilingual Story Time with refreshments and prizes for children ages 3-5 Saturdays from 2-3 p.m. at the library, 470 Fifth St. For details, call 636-4107.

Jewish Food Festival and Craft Fair:

The congregation Beth Israel in Carmel Valley will host the community celebration of food and the arts on Aug. 24. The festival is open to the public and welcomes painters, potters, photographers, woodworkers and artists who design or make jewelry, sew, knit or stitch. Summer Reading Program: The Friends of the San Benito County Free Library will sponsor a free summer reading program, “Reading is a Picnic,” for young adults and children 6 and over Thursdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. through Aug. 7 at the library, 470 Fifth St. Mary Lee Sunseri will perform Marylee’s Musical Library Show for children during Awards Night Aug. 7.
