Suspenseful tales of daring do, fighting to the death over the hand of a beautiful maiden and pirate shanties, are just a part of the new movie “Pirates of the Caribbean: The curse of the Black Pearl,” currently playing at Premiere Cinemas.

This two-hour and 23-minute release from Walt Disney Studios is a fun, exciting and surprisingly humorous piece of filmmaking.

For someone like myself who grew up watching actors like Errol Flynn and Douglas Fairbanks in movies like “The Sea Hawk,” “Captain Blood,” “The Black Swan” and “The Crimson Pirate,” this movies was a breath of fresh air.

Director Gore Verbinski never took himself or his movie too seriously and interspersed this movie with a really good dose of humor.

The humor fit well with Johnny Depp’s off-beat but wonderful portrayal of the quirky Captain Jack Sparrow, a dashing but occasionally bumbling pirate whose exploits are known far and wide.

Just when it seems audiences were beginning to grow a little weary of the same old gun-toting, car-chasing action flicks, Walt Disney digs bag into the past and dusts off a genre that hasn’t been seen on the silver screen in many years (unless you count “Muppet Treasure Island” from 1996).

The plot for this film centers around Sparrow’s unlikely teaming up with a talented young blacksmith, Will Turner, who is an expert sword maker. Turner, who was shipwrecked as a child by pirates.

In his pastime, Turner practices with the swords he makes, up to three hours a day so that he would be able to defend himself if he ever ran across a pirate.

However, Turner is madly in love with the Governor’s daughter ably played by Keira Knightley, but since he is a black smith he is so far below her socially, that her father won’t allow her to even contemplate her marrying Turner.

But Governor’s daughter has been hiding a secret from Turner, when he was found as a child, he was wearing a gold coin when he was wearing when he was found as a child. The coin once it touches the ocean summons the Black Pearl, a cursed ship with an equally cursed and bloodthirsty crew of pirates.

Although most of the violence in this film is tame by modern comparison. Some of the themes in this film are too frightening for young kids.
