children’s program: The Aromas Branch of the Monterey County Free Libraries is hosting a children’s program given by P&T Puppet Theater on July 17 at 10 a.m. P&T Puppet Theater will delight children with puppetry inspired from children’s literature and folklore. Food distribution: Community Pantry will be distributing USDA Commodities to low-income south San Benito County residents at Panoche School Saturday, July 19, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. The distribution is for south county residents who meet the federal income eligibility requirements. Relay for Life: The Hollister Relay for Life and The American Cancer Society will hold a dining out fund-raiser July 23 at Chevy’s Mexican Restaurant in Gilroy in which Chevy’s will donate 20 percent of the proceeds.

library book sale: Friends of the Library is having a book sale Saturday, July 26, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. by the courtyard and shed behind the library at 470 Fifth St. New and used books are for sale for every interest area and reading level. Donated books are appreciated also. Please bring them to the front desk clerk and say they are for the “Friends Book sale,” which is held each month.

SJB Library garage sale: A garage sale benefiting the San Juan Bautista Library will be Sunday, Aug. 3 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Individual spaces are available for residents of San Benito County only – no vendors. Among the items offered include pizza, home-made pies, white elephant, old and new books along with a Scholastic book fair. All money made by individuals is theirs to keep. Get a table by Aug. 1.

cuerpos locos and watercolors exhibits: Galeria Tonantzin will feature two exhibits for the month of August – “Cuerpos Locos (Wild Bodies)” and “Lee Taiz Watercolors.” “Cuerpos Locos” is a series of surreal figurative work done by Liesa Lietzke, Heather Morgan and Carmen Ogden. A reception open to the public will be Aug. 10 from 4 to 7 p.m. with a book reading by Lee and Lincoln Taiz at 5 p.m. They will read from “Libra: The Cat That Saved Silicon Valley,” a sci-fi story set in the silicon age.

Kids at the Park: The 10th annual Kids at the Park will be held Wednesday, Aug. 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Dunne Park (West Street between Sixth and Seventh streets). The event is free and open to the public. There will be free fingerprinting, face painting and healthy snacks. Children can meet the Tooth Fairy, Smokey the Bear and McGruff. YMCA Charity Golf: YMCA’s fifth annual Charity Golf Tournament will be held Aug. 22 at San Juan Oaks Golf Club. Cost is $150 per golfer which includes green fee, cart, range balls, box lunch, dinner and prizes. Check-in time is 8:30 a.m. with a shot-gun start at noon. Entries must be received by Aug. 15. All proceeds will benefit the YMCA of San Benito County.

Y After-School Program: The YMCA After-school program will now be offered in San Juan Bautista. Space is now available for the 2003-04 school year for youth in grades k though 8. The program encourages children to participate in a variety of structured activities such as physical fitness, homework, tutoring and arts and crafts.
