The Baler golf team wrapped up its league portion of the schedule Thursday afternoon at Spyglass Hill with a 227-236 loss to Robert Luis Stevenson.

Both Ashly Cullumber and Corryn Pacheco tied for the Haybaler low at 58.

Hillary Williams recorded a 59, and Megan Smith and Jenny Mahau had a 61. Johni Kieswetter finished off the scoring with a 66.

“Anyone that has played Spyglass before knows it is a difficult course,” said Haybaler coach Mark Tinder. “Once you are off the fairways in the ice plants, it is tough to get back. We are not experienced with that. And that can befuddle any golfer.”

None of the San Benito golfers had ever golfed on the course before, Tinder said.

“I feel we should have played it at least once or twice before to have a chance,” Tinder said. “It is even intimidating for golfers with low handicaps. The greens were fast so it was easy to have putts slide by the hole. We gave up strokes here and there that we normally would not give up.”

San Benito will play in the TCAL finals Oct. 27 at the Salinas Country Club. Golfers will play 18 holes, while the regular matches are played on nine.

“Sometimes conditioning comes in to play on the back nine because the girls have to carry their own bags,” Tinder said. “I’d like to think our girls our better conditioned because they play other sports.”

The Balers will be practicing every day this week except for Tuesday, which is the night of the team banquet at Ridgemark.
