Live Oak snuck away with a 4-3 victory over San Benito Thursday afternoon in Hollister.
The Balers (4-8, 1-5 TCAL) won the No. 4 singles match behind Jessica Trudell’s 6-7, 7-6, 7-6 win.
“I was really impressed with her performance,” said Baler coach Ed Cecena. “She was playing her first varsity match and did extremely well to win in three.”
The other two Baler victories were a 6-1, 6-2 win by No. 2 doubles Tracy Hopkins and Jamie Houston and a 6-0, 6-2 win by No. 3 doubles dual Sheryl Overman and Fritzie Lacdao. Hopkins and Lacdao were playing as substitutes.
The Balers lost their top three singles spots. No. 1 Jill Merigan lost 1-6, 1-6, No. 2 Vanessa Martinez lost 1-6, 3-6 and No. 3 Mary Von Urff lost 3-6, 1-6.
“Jill is very competitive,” Cecena said about the No. 1 player. “She has come a long ways since she was on the No. 3 doubles last year. She is a really good team player. She takes her lumps playing some of the other teams’ top players.”
In doubles, Becky Bonner and Mary Beth Miller lost 6-2, 6-7, 3-6.
“We had a couple of matches that could have went either way,” Cecena said. “We’re a young team. It is good for some of the younger players to see some time.”
The Balers face off against Gilroy next Tuesday in Gilroy.
“They handled us pretty good last time,” Cecena said. “Right now we’re interested in developing players and getting some players some match experience.”
