Just as they did in the courtroom Wednesday afternoon, we applaud the decision by Judge Robert Yonts to dismiss a lawsuit brought by Rebecca McGovern and Earthjustice, which attempted to eliminate next March’s vote on Measure G.

The Slow Growth Control Initiative has already divided this county and its residents to an alarming degree. After many months of haggling over this complex issue, it ended up where it belongs: At the ballot box.

The future of San Benito County is at stake in many ways over this measure and who should decide? Earthjustice and its big bucks?

No, the residents of this county should and will decide. Of course, McGovern and Earthjustice will waste more time and money appealing this common sense decision, but we are confident and very hopeful the case will not be revived.

The lawsuit has already been damaging in several ways. It has wasted some county residents’ money to oppose it. And, worse yet, it has distracted and delayed county residents from learning as much as they can about Measure G before making their decision.

The clock is ticking toward March 2004 so we ask you to quickly get back on the educational track.

The third SBC Consensus Building Workshop will be held this Saturday at the San Juan Bautista Community Center from 8:15 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Whether or not you participated in either or both of the first two, we urge you to attend.

Shared information and working together toward a reasonable solution are the answers, a concept that goes even beyond the vote on Measure G. There will be life – and change – beyond a single vote in March to determine the future of this beautiful and historic county.

for more information on the workshop.

And we invite you to go online to our Web site at www.freelancenews.com, where we have posted the entire Measure G ordinance, along with an excellent Matrix, or comparison, of Measure G and similar measures, which was compiled and provided to us by Franz Schneider.

The vote will remain for March on Measure G after the frivolous waste of time and money from McGovern and her, in this case, misguided Earthjustice backers.

Real knowledge and common sense have prevailed for now. We hope it stays on this righteous path for the future of San Benito County.
