SALINAS –– The San Benito volleyball team wrapped up its season on a positive note Thursday night against Notre Dame even though the Balers lost 19-25, 25-27, 26-24, 21-25.
“Our girls finally came back and did what they needed to do,” said Baler coach Chuck Schallhorn. “They showed the heart I knew they had. When you give it your best shot, you have nothing to be ashamed of. They played better than us tonight.”
For the second time in a week, the Balers (18-18, 5-5 TCAL) battled tough against a league front runner.
“We knew it would be close,” said Notre Dame assistant coach Joe Given, whose team is 9-1. “They gave us a good battle last time. They have a lot of height and were able to get a lot of balls down.”
In the second game, the Balers built up a couple leads of five and six points before Notre Dame came back and ultimately won.
Alysssa Given and Melissa Pura led the Spirit attack with their tough putdowns. However, Pura was removed in the third game after she reinjured her leg. In that third game, San Benito was down 6-0 before coming back to win.
“Volleyball is so bizarre – it plays with your head,” Schallhorn said.
Melissa Moore confused the Notre Dame offense with her tough jump serves. She picked up 10 aces in the game.
The Balers were led by Leslie Schipper with 15 kills. Schipper also led the team in digs with 16. Jaime Hall made the most of her limited time this season with eight kills.
“Jaime has really been proving herself in the last couple weeks,” Schallhorn said. “She came up with a big game when we needed her to go in at the week side.”
Stephanie Mauro had 15 assists, and Kathleen McCullough had 12. Mallorie Wilson, Jamie Temperino and Schipper came up with several big blocks in the game.
San Benito will find out Saturday if it made the Central Coast Section playoffs during the seeding meeting at 1 p.m. in San Jose.
