By the time she graduated college at Indiana University, Terri Scheumann was ready to move somewhere new. San Benito County was just the place for the Midwesterner.
“I lived in the same town since I was born, so I wanted a change – plus, there are no jobs where I lived anyway,” Scheumann said.
Scheumann used the World Wide Web to search jobs around the country and applied to an opening at the Free Lance. Moving to California – her first time in the state – was a scary thought for the 22-year-old – she didn’t know anyone here and she didn’t like the idea of earthquakes or being somewhere unfamiliar.
After Scheumann accepted the job as news editor/page designer, she drove to California with her father and found a place to live her first day. Scheumann’s lived in Hollister for about a month.
“It’s pretty much what I expected,” she said about Hollister. “It’s an adjustment as far as the weather is concerned. Also, the landscape is totally different – everything’s flat in Indiana.”
Scheumann grew up in Decatur, Ind. She received a degree in telecommunications from Indiana University. Originally wanting to go into film or television editing or producing, Scheumann soon found she preferred newspapers.
“I thought it would be fun, but it turned out that I liked doing newspaper stuff better than my major,” she said. “I worked at a newspaper in high school. It came naturally.”
In high school, Scheumann served as a staff member and features editor. In college, she was a copy chief, design chief, news production manager, copy editor and page designer at the Indiana Daily Student.
Layout allows Scheumann to be creative, but organized and orderly at the same time.
“Terri is already one of our key players on the newsroom team,” said Free Lance Executive Editor Mike Fitzgerald. “She is an excellent page designer, copy editor and knows how to handle breaking news. We’re very fortunate that she chose to come to Hollister and the Free Lance.”
Living in Hollister is nice because it’s less than a 30-minute drive to the beach, she said, but Scheumann is having a hard time adjusting to the rural nature.
“I hear cows sometimes when I’m sleeping. That’s supposed to happen in Indiana, not here. I never heard cows in Indiana,” she said.
