The day in downtown Hollister was sparkling and so was the tribute to our heroes on Veterans Day.

It was a welcome sight as folks of all ages marched, rode or walked in the downtown parade to salute those who gave us our most important gift in the United States of America.

Our freedom.

San Benito Street had a good turnout as people of all ages and backgrounds gathered to salute those who participated in the parade and, more important, to honor those who gave their lives or sacrificed so much so that we can be free.

To make the day even more of a patriotic postcard, the Veterans Building – which continues to grow in beauty and stature – seemed to be glowing with pride as a centerpiece for the red, white and blue festivities.

Representatives from all four main branches of our Armed Forces were there, along with the future of our great country: The Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts, Cub Scouts and other youth groups.

The San Benito High band was magnificent and the fire trucks shiny and fun. It was also a thrill to have the planes soar overhead and a local parade just wouldn’t be one without Jim West and his classic cars.

We didn’t even mind the local politicians grabbing a bit of the spotlight per tradition as they truly wanted to honor the purpose of the party and not so much themselves.

The many American flags, the ones that still signify freedom across the land and around the world were plentiful, with the giant one at the Veterans Building an awesome sight.

We would like to thank the many participants, organizers and volunteers who made the day as special as it was.

Parade coordinator Richard Herrera should especially take a bow.

Similar parades around the country were limited or even canceled so we are especially thankful for the hard work that went into keeping Hollister’s alive and well.

There is no greater cause to salute than our bravest of the brave military veterans and their families.
