It’s no secret – excessive sunlight or time spent in a tanning bed can increase the risks of skin cancer, cause premature wrinkling and a slew of other health risks.
A new tanning fad is spraying millions of Americans, as well as local residents, a new shade of brown without putting their health in jeopardy.
A tan that is sprayed on by using an airbrush applicator is being performed at Slender Lady of Hollister, said owner Jill Martin.
The spray on tanning is something offered in all of Slender Lady’s franchise salons, which is perfect for Hollister because no one else in the area offers the service, Martin said.
“Plus we’re into more of the health benefits,” she said. “The tanning beds are so bad for our skin and this is totally cancer-free tanning.”
The active ingredient in the solution is DHA (dihydrozyacetone), which is FDA approved for cosmetic use, and nourishes the skin while allowing for better adhesion and longer-lasting results, according to a Slender Lady brochure on the application.
“It’s definitely recommended by dermatologists, because tanning beds are so bad,” Martin said.
A session usually takes about 20 minutes to apply and 10 minutes to dry, and lasts for up to 7 days. If customers exfoliate before the solution is applied, and then continue to moisturize while it is on the skin, the tan will last longer, Martin said.
A single application starts out at $29, with Martin recommending that people do a follow-up tan three to five days later to secure the solution and make the tan last longer.
“A lot of people do it for a special occasion – for a wedding or if they’re going out the first time in the summer and their legs are white,” Martin said. “But we tell them they need to moisturize twice a day and still use sun protection.”
The airbrushing can be applied as light or dark as the customer wishes and can be applied to the whole body or just to portions.
“I have one lady who comes in who doesn’t want to wear any makeup on her face, so she comes in and gets her tan which makes a nice glow on her face,” Martin said. “We do her face, chest and her arms in the winter.”
Customers of all ages, from eight years old to the elderly, have utilized the service. Martin expects it won’t just be a fad but will catch on as more people realize it’s available.
The only drawback is that it doesn’t last very long, but people of all economic backgrounds can partake in the tanning for a special occasion, Martin said.
“We’ve had all groups come in,” she said. “And there’s a lot more benefits.”
