San Benito County officials are warning residents, contractors, applicants and members of the public about a recent email scam involving fraudulent messages impersonating county staff associated with Planning and Building Services.
County authorities became aware of scam emails being sent from unauthorized email domains, says a press release from San Benito County. The fraudulent emails have attempted to solicit wire transfers or payments for invoices related to county applications and services.
Official county communications are sent only through verified email domains that end in “@sanbenitocountyca.gov,” says the press release.
“Residents are urged to exercise caution when receiving unexpected requests for payment, especially those requesting wire transfers, payment through unofficial channels or immediate action,” the press release continues.
County officials advise the public to:
• Carefully verify the sender’s email address before responding to any message.
• Avoid opening suspicious attachments or clicking unfamiliar links.
• Contact the appropriate county department directly using official contact information listed on the county website to confirm payment requests or invoices.
• Report suspicious communications immediately.
