The San Benito High girls soccer team suffered a tough 1-0 loss Friday against visiting Soquel.
The only goal of the game came on a questionable penalty kick in the 66th minute.
“The ref said that Amy (Baxter) was holding the other player down,” said Baler coach Mike Schurig. “But they were both kicking at the ball. While they were both kicking the ball on the ground, Amy’s leg crossed over the other player’s when they were getting up.”
The holding call gave Soquel’s Brittny Beshore the penalty kick, which turned out to be the deciding goal in the game.
Schurig said that the game could have been a winnable contest with a couple more shot attempts.
“We just didn’t shoot enough,” Schurig said. “They outshot us, but didn’t get inside the 18 to shoot. We need to get our center midfielders to shoot more.”
Goalie Mary Von Urff had a strong game in the net and consistently came up with big saves.
“Defense is really starting to come along,” Schurig said. “We need to get more going offensively with our midfield. Soquel did a great job of passing back from the 18 to one of the center midfielders, who would shoot it.”
San Benito (3-4-1) has lost by two goals or less in every game except against Santa Cruz, when the team did not yet have its full roster together.
The Balers will play a rescheduled game against Seaside on Wednesday and then will play at Pioneer on Friday.
