The San Benito High School Scarlet Regiment Band traveled to Santa Cruz on Oct. 19 for the first competition of the year. The Band received a fourth place in Marching and Music and a third place for Drum Major, Mace category.

This is the band’s second year of competition and the Scarlet Regiment already has won 141 awards. This year alone, the band has won 51 awards under the direction of James R. Zuniga. The color guard is under the direction of Camille Zuniga.

This band review draws schools from the Coast Counties, Bay Area Counties and the Central California Counties. San Benito is a large high school but the band is small in size, therefore, perfection for our band members is critical.

When the time came, Drum Major Michelle Juarez gave the marching orders and the band began flawlessly. Drum Major Juarez saluted the Host Marshal of the parade as the band played “Through Bolts and Bars.” The band members did a shift in their march where they all moved into a tight group march while the color guard made movements in front of the judges. After clearing the judging stand, the band returned to their normal marching position.

After the competition, the opportunity to play on Beach Street in front of the Boardwalk was expected as the crowds of people watched. As the band marched on, unexpectedly the Big Trees and Pacific Train freight car came head-on to the band in the middle of the street. Without much disorder, the band shifted out of the path of the train. They continued to play over the noise of the locomotive. After passing the train, they shifted into their normal marching formation. It was an exciting moment for the band and the crowds.

The regiment finished with scores of 86 for marching and music and 85 for the drum major. There are many more competitions to follow and room for improvement as the season continues. This band is looking forward to excellence in the face of their competitors.
