The first time I saw Isidro Trujillo he was a sophomore on the junior varsity soccer team. I’d be wrapping up the varsity boys game, talking to coaches and players and the like. There would be Trujillo with a couple of his JV teammates and they would help me out with the team and individual scoring of the JV’s. They were pivotal in my JV coverage. Isidro usually would score a goal or four and his friends emphasized that I call him Isidro “El Caballo” Trujillo. So I’d usually put in the Spanish equivalent of “The Horse.”

The horse ran well at Saturday’s Tri-County Athletic League sweepstakes, wire-to-wire well. Trujillo kept the Balers record for individual boys champion intact with a first place clocking of 16:19. That makes it seven straight Balers as individual varsity cross-country champs. Was that the JV soccer player I once knew who came over with a smile and a laugh after he tallied a couple of goals?

I believe it was…

The Baler boys polo squad participated in the Monta Vista Tournament over the weekend, playing all three of its matches at the John Felix Memorial Pool on the campus of Los Altos. The Balers met the Eagles in their home pool and the Eagles, one of the better teams in the CCS, pulled away for an 16-3 victory on Friday. The stunned Balers couldn’t recover in time, losing to Gunn 7-5 Friday evening, despite four goals from Nik Barr.

“I don’t know what it was against Gunn,” said Baler coach Tom Agan. “We were flat, I guess. We had better pick it up before this weekend. We look tired, right now.”

The Balers (19-5) came back strong on Saturday with a 13-3 win over San Lorenzo Valley.

“We moved better,” said Agan. “That was the biggest thing. Barr played real well Saturday.”

The Balers are idle until Saturday at 10 a.m. when they’ll most likely play Salinas in the TCAL semis at Live Oak.

“I’m concerned about Live Oak and Stevenson,” said Agan. “They both want us real bad. We’re going to have to step it up a notch.”…

The Baler girls polo club starts TCALs Tuesday at home vs. probably Notre Dame. First sprint is 3:30 p.m. An expected win by the Balers moves them into Thursday’s semis at Santa Catalina. The championship match is at Live Oak this Saturday at 2 p.m…

Speaking of TCALs, the TCAL tennis tourney is at Ridgemark Tennis Center this Thursday-Friday. Baler coach Ed Cecena has already comprised the six girls necessary for two singles and two doubles teams.

Phoebe Bachofer will be the top seed in singles and will be joined by Elena Briber. Cecena has mixed up his doubles teams with Danielle Patino teaming up with Nicole Conley. The other doubles team is Crista Hill and Allison Filice.

“That means all of my seniors are in TCAL’s,” said Cecena. “Danielle and Nicole should be a very formidable team.”

Action begins at 9 a.m. both days…

The Baler volleyball squad is expected to clinch the TCAL title Tuesday night at Salinas. Then it’s a non-league match on Wednesday vs. a good Aptos side at Mattson Gym. On Thursday, Notre Dame comes calling looking for revenge as the Balers play their final TCAL game before CCS starts next week…

Don’t forget this Friday night’s football game is homecoming vs. Salinas. Good luck to all royalty and float builders.
