Hollister High, which was seeded No. 3 in the Central Coast Section Division I boys water polo tournament, was shocked by No. 6 Aragon 14-10 in Saturday’s quarterfinals at St. Francis High School.
“We played well for three quarters,” said Baler coach Tom Agan. “We were flat in the second period and they took advantage.”
The Dons (17-12) broke away to lead 9-5 at the half. The Balers, who finished the year at 19-6 and with a Tri-County Athletic League championship, led 3-1 at one juncture in the first period.
Nik Barr led the Balers with four goals.
“Nik was like a coach in the water,” said Agan. “We’ll miss him like we’ll miss all of our seniors. We’ll have some good players coming back, but we’ll have a lot of work to do going into next season. These things go in cycles. It may take us awhile to have a team of this caliber.”
Agan tabbed Christian Smith, Robbie Shattuck and Lucas Zepeda as his top three returnees in ’03.
