The Lessalt treatment plant may well be a step in the right direction for improved water quality. However, a clarification should be made with respect to the quote City Engineer Steve Wittry said “the plant will lower the total dissolved solids – essentially salts – by one-third.”
Consumers living closest to the treatment plant may enjoy improved water quality as estimated by Mr. Wittry. Depending on hydraulic grade, usage and other factors in the distribution system, City of Hollister and/or Sunnyslope customers farther away from this source of water should expect the same quality of water, especially if they live near a water production well.
This could be proven by a hydraulic model. Water samples should be taken at regular intervals and designated sites in order to monitor TDS and verify Mr. Wittry’s claim.
However, the City of Hollister would be much better served in partnering with the San Benito County Water District to achieve substantive water quality improvements. And there is an open invitation for the City of Hollister to do just that.
