City Hall

With most mail-in ballots counted – poll and provisional ballots remained for tallying – the first round of unofficial results for Measure K showed the City of Hollister’s treasurer position would continue to be elected and not appointed.
Measure K asked voters if the position should be appointed and the preliminarily results posted just after the polls closed at 8 p.m. showed 59.3 percent voted “no.” The elections office released the latest round of unofficial results at 12:27 a.m. with all precincts reporting and showed 58.77 percent voted against the measure.
The measure hit the ballot after about eight years of the position being appointed to City Clerk Geri Johnson because no candidates ran in recent elections. This year, though, three people vied for the seat. The candidates for treasurer were Karina Hernandez, a licensed insurance broker; Cecilia Rios, a Hollister Free Lance account executive; and Judi Johnson, a city transcriptionist.
According to the latest round of unofficial results, Rios had 38.31 percent of the votes, followed by Johnson with 32.30 percent and Hernandez with 28.8 percent.
Frank Felice last held the elected treasurer job. He passed away while in office in January 2006, and the city clerk was appointed to take his position. In November of that year, the city’s voters opposed Measure O, which – like this measure – would have changed the position of city treasurer from elected to appointed. No candidates ran for treasurer during that election, so it was appointed to the city clerk.
