Mary Sellen, 88, attended the Memorial Day events May 25. She is a resident of San Juan Bautista and moved to San Benito when she was 2. She has been a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary No. 6359 for 63 years.

Sellen’s brother Raymond served in the army during World War II. Her husband John, a Marine, served in the Pacific during World War II.

At the services, Rev. Rudy Ruiz, of Sacred Heart St. Benedict Catholic Church, said a mass at the Calvery Cemetery for families and friends of those who have served in the military.

He stressed how much is owed to those who paid the ultimate price.

The day of events was hosted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Ladies Auxiliary Posts 9242 and 6359 and the American Legion Post 69. People gathered at San Juan Cemetery at 9 a.m., then moved to the IOOF Cemetery at 10 a.m., with a planned stop at Calvary Cemetery at 11 a.m. The groups hosted a barbecue at the Veterans Memorial Building in Hollister after the services and ceremonies.
