Members of Marguerite Maze Middle School’s Club Live will participate in its end-of-the-year celebration with all-night bowling from midnight to 6 a.m. Saturday.

Club Live is a version of Friday Night Live for younger students. Students take a pledge to be drug, alcohol, tobacco and violence free, club advisor Shari Vanderpool said.

“It’s a way to show them there’s other things to do besides going out and getting into trouble,” she said.

Once the students enter the party, the doors are locked to the public for safety and then students enjoy a night of nachos, glow bowling and prizes, Vanderpool said.

About 50 students are expected with eight chaperones. There are more than 200 active and inactive members, Vanderpool said.

The goal of the club is to offer enjoyable things to do while staying out of trouble.

“We do fun activities. We try to get them to chose a healthy lifestyle. If you do that, more opportunities will come to you,” Vanderpool said.

Vanderpool said she’s very family oriented and attempts to get club members’ families involved in the activities and functions.

The all-night bowl also serves as a sober graduation celebration for graduating eighth graders. Vanderpool said students need to be taught and reminded that celebrations and activities can be fun without the use of drugs or alcohol.

Club Live, developed in 1988, is a statewide organization under the California State Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs.
