The San Juan Bautista Service Club is saying “thank you” to the San Juan Bautista Volunteer Fire Department with the second annual dinner-dance.

This year’s celebration will be held Saturday, May 3 at 5:30 p.m. at the Casa Maria restaurant on the corner of First and San Jose streets in San Juan.

Service Club member Ron Vaccarezza and his wife Bernadette will serve up a barbecue chicken dinner with all the fixings and a disk jockey will provide the dance tunes.

“We had close to 150 people show up last year,” Bernadette said. “We would like to get close to 200 people.”

The event was first held in February as a Valentine’s Day dance, at the same time that Father Ed Fitz-Henry of Mission San Juan Bautista holds his annual dinner-dance at Casa Maria.

“This year we decided to have it a little later. It works much better this way,” Bernadette said. “The weather is nicer, daylight is longer, people can go out on the balcony. It would be real pretty to see the beautiful view of the valley.”

When the Service Club decided to change the date later in the spring, Father Ed offered Casa Maria for the dinner-dance, she said.

Bernadette said the club got a late start on publicizing the event, but she doesn’t think that will affect attendance because “people usually like to come out in support of the fire department.”

There will be a donation bar serving beer and wine and a 50-50 raffle will be held.

“Half the pot goes to the firemen,” Bernadette said. “They did very well last year.”

The fire department also received outside donations from surrounding cities.

“A lot of people came from Hollister and joined us, which was really nice,” she said.

The Service Club will also have take-out dinners for people who want to show their support of the fire department “but … prefer to stay home and eat in peace and quiet,” Bernadette said.

Tickets are $10 and are available at the San Juan Bautista Chamber of Commerce, San Juan City Hall or by calling Bernadette at 636-3193.
