It’s Saturday and Red Phone’s back at it suffering from a case of laryngitis that has stolen the Crimson Crusader’s voice on its answering machine. To the many callers who have dialed up the Vermillion Avenger over the last few weeks, rest assured the Red Phone hears you after the beep. And not to worry, the Free Lance editors promise they’re working on the problem so keep the calls coming or shoot an e-mail to

Pondering Portuguese

After reading about the immigration of Portuguese-Americans to Hollister, a reader has a question about the Portuguese Lodge.

“I enjoyed the article in Saturday’s paper about Portuguese-Americans in Hollister, but what does the sign S.D.E.S Hall outside the lodge stand for? (It was in the photo included with the article.)”

Red Phone dialed up Debbie Martin who was kind enough to answer the query. The sign stands for Sociedade Do Divino Espirto Santo in Portuguese. Yes, Red Phone knows that would be S.D.D.E.S, but Martin assured it was correct. The phrase means Society of Divine Holy Spirit.

Another favorite photo

The cryptic messages left by one frequent Red Phone caller often credits Free Lance photographer Nick Lovejoy’s eye for catching stunning images, but he found a new favorite in our March 11 issue.

“I am a horse lover but that may be the prettiest picture yet with the poppies in the foreground. That is very relaxful (sic) and nice to look at. Thank you.”

He called again Friday.

“The Red Hawk picture on the Local A2 page on Friday is quite a picture.”

Thanks for the compliments. If readers see an image they like in the Free Lance, all pictures taken by our staff are available for purchase. Call Lovejoy at 637-5566 ext. 331 for more information on buying something that catches your fancy.
