Memorial Day Weekend event is designed to promote the airport
The planned Memorial Day Weekend air show at the Hollister Airport is expected to fly after the City Council this week approved using $15,000 from airport fund reserves to finance the inaugural event.
The airport-sponsored event will be a Category 3 air show, meaning only aircraft that have a cruising speed of less than 156 knots and propeller-driven aircraft will be permitted.
City Manager Clint Quilter said discussion about creating a partnership to promote the local wine industry as part of the show will be put off until later because “in this first year of the event, that’s more than we can take on.”
He did mention that such a partnership is something “the council would like to see in the future.”
Airport Director Mike Chambless has said the air show will help promote the airport and give the city an idea how many people are willing to attend an event at the venue.
While plans are still in the works, Chambless has said that vendor booths will be available for rent over the weekend, which was selected as the preferred date because it will not conflict with air shows in Salinas and Watsonville.
