Our first Red Phone caller of the week, a Hollister man, called to see if the Crimson Crusader could get something done about a rooster living at the baseball park on Powell Street in Hollister. Our caller said the flightless fowl was waking up the entire neighborhood early in the morning and driving our caller “nuts.” Ho, ho, ho. Roosters can ruin one’s morning; the Crimson Crusader knows that.

Our hero called Hollister Animal Control to see what could be done. Animal Control supervisor Julie Carreiro said local law prevents roosters from being kept in the city, but she said wild roosters can often be hard to catch. Carreiro said she would drive by the park today to see what could be done. To reach Hollister Animal Control call 636-4320. In the meantime, dearest caller, you might consider getting a pair of earplugs.

When to Pull over

Our next Red Phone caller, a local woman, wanted the Crimson Crusader to remind San Benito County motorists about the proper emergency vehicle etiquette. The Crimson Crusader called San Benito County Sheriff’s Lt. Roy Iler to get the skinny on the proper procedures for yielding to emergency vehicle such as police cars, fire trucks and ambulances.

Iler said drivers on both sides of an undivided road should pull over to the side and wait until the vehicle passes. After an emergency vehicle passes, Iler said, drivers should remain alert and be prepared for additional vehicles. Failure to yield to an emergency vehicle is a crime, Iler said. It is also a crime to follow within 300 feet of an emergency vehicle. In addition, Iler said, drivers should pull over to help save lives.

Red Phone on Hold

After looking through the ever growing “On Hold” file, the Crimson Crusader checked up on an item from earlier this month regarding an abandoned home. One of our Red Phone callers brought this to the attention of the Crusader after mail and trash began piling up at a house at the corner of B Street and Powell Street in Hollister several weeks ago. Hollister Code Enforcement Officer Mike Chambless had looked into the problem originally, so our hero gave him a call Tuesday to see what had been done.

Chambless said he was heading out to board up the abandoned house today. He also thanked the Crimson Crusader for bringing the problem to his attention. All the credit goes to our wonderful Red Phone callers, Mr. Chambless.

After 11 days on hold, it looks like we can cross this matter of the list.
