Hurrah! Dearest readers, this is a historic occasion demanding celebration. The Kentucky Fried Chicken sign that has stood over a vacant lot on San Benito Street for the last five years has finally come down.

The sign was torn out Thursday. Property owner Todd Renz said he hopes to develop the property and “get it looking good” in the coming years. He said several restaurants have expressed interest in the property and plans to turn it into an office retail complex are also under consideration.

Renz said he and co-owner Bob Cain never wanted the property to be an eyesore for local residents and actually improved it tremendously when they bought it more than a year ago. It should be noted that the sign was standing above the empty lot long before Renz and Cain purchased the property.

Plans had been in the works for months to demolish the entire site, Renz said, but after hordes of Red Phone callers complained about the KFC sign, the property owners decided to take it down early.

In honor of this occasion, the Crimson Crusader is hereby honoring Renz and Cain, both of whom own other properties in Hollister, with the “Crimson Badge of Courage” for their continued work in making our city a better place. Bottoms up, dearest readers; after 75 days on the Crusader’s “Red Phone on Hold” list, we can finally cross this one off.

An Important

Animal Question

Our first Red Phone caller, a local woman, asked the Crimson Crusader if there are any state or city laws about what kind of animals are permitted in public supermarkets.

The Crimson Crusader called Hollister Police Officer Rosie Betanio to find the answer. Betanio said service animals such as seeing-eye dogs are permitted just about anywhere. But as for other animals, it depends on the rules of the individual store.

Rally Parking

Question Answered

Our next Red Phone caller, a Hollister woman, asked the Crimson Crusader if she would be able to park her car in front of her Fifth Street home during the rally.

The Crimson Crusader called rally promoter Seth Doulton to find out the answer. Mr. Doulton said our caller would, indeed, be able to park in front of her home. He said the rally venue ends at Monterey Street. Everything west of that will be open to normal traffic.

Crimson Crusader

Looking for Work

Since the graffiti near the intersection of Sunnyslope and Airline Highway was cleaned up before the Crusader and Supervisor Anthony Botelho could get out there to do the work, our hero is looking for a new public works project to settle the bet. Call the Red Phone at 635-9219 this week with suggestions for a project for the two.
