For the second time this week, a main broke on San Benito Street causing water to fill gutters there during the San Benito High School homecoming parade.

Hollister Utility Supervisor Henry Gonzales said this incident, near Olive Street, was similar to Wednesday’s main break at San Benito and Hawkins streets.

Today’s break occurred around 2:30 p.m. in the 1200 block of San Benito Street, about three blocks from the site of Wednesday’s main break.

To remedy the leak today, city workers turned off valves and turned on a fire hydrant near the intersection of San Benito and Palm streets. From this break, water flowed east all the way to Monterey Street and south to Palmtag Drive.

Near Olive Street, water still was bubbling out of cracks from the previous road repair.

Gonzales said after an incident like this, there are no remains of what caused it.

“Once a line like that breaks, all the evidence of what happened is washed out.”

On Wednesday, a main break caused the city to shut down a portion San Benito Street to fix the problem. Repairs continued today, causing homecoming parade organizers to alter the route. The section of road from South Street to Haydon Street is still closed while water lines are being replaced.
