It was a busy week for the Crimson Crusader. Three local ladies called the Red Phone asking the Crimson Crusader to find out what stores would be setting up shop in the retail facilities on McCray Street near Albertson’s and the new Kentucky Fried Chicken.

The Crimson Crusader has been asked this question several times, and has failed to learn the answer. But the Crimson Crusader isn’t the only person who doesn’t know what shops will open up on McCray. City staff and members of the Hollister Planning Commission don’t know either. And the only man who does know, local developer Richard Scagliotti, isn’t talking. When the Crimson Crusader called him on Friday to try to see what stores would be put in, Scagliotti hung up on our hero. The Crimson Crusader went out to the retail buildings on Friday, but several contractors there told our hero that they didn’t know what stores would be going in there.

Where’s the broken water main coverage?

Our next Red Phone call came from a Hollister woman who wanted to know why there weren’t any articles in the Hollister Free Lance regarding the broken water main that closed down a portion of Fourth Street this week.

Dearest caller, Free Lance staff writer Anthony Ha was writing an article on that very issue when you called. The Free Lance published Ha’s story about the break on the front page of Thursday’s newspaper.

Fourth Street was closed for several days after a water main under the street broke, shutting down traffic and water service to that block. The main first broke Monday night. The break was fixed, but another segment of the main snapped Tuesday. On Wednesday, Fourth Street remained closed between College and Line streets – affecting more than 10 homes – as city workers continued their repairs. The repairs have since been completed and the street has been reopened.

Craving Chicken Fried Steak from new KFC

Our final Red Phone call came from a local woman who asked the Crimson Crusader how to order chicken fried steak on the menu from the new Kentucky Fried Chicken. The Crimson Crusader called KFC and asked. The answer: “Sorry, sir, we don’t have that.”

So, dearest caller, it looks like you and your family may be out of luck on this one. However, the Crimson Crusader has a great recipe for chicken fried steak and would gladly fix up a batch for everyone in the family should you need such country cooking to ease the pain of this terrible news. Give our hero a call.
