A six-run sixth inning made things interesting for the Anzar High softball team against visiting Gonzales on Monday.

The Hawks (1-3, 0-3 MTAL) took the game to nine innings before losing 9-7.

“It was kind of a letdown after coming back,” said Hawk coach Jeff Waller. “But it was encouraging that we didn’t die.”

Anzar scored one run in the first and then scored scored six runs in the sixth inning courtesy of hits by Mary Alba and Cody Campoli and some Gonzales errors. Gonzales (2-4, 1-3 MTAL) tied it up with a run in the seventh inning.

With the tie-breaker rule in effect, Gonzales hit a double to bring in a run and scored the another run on an error.

Rachelle Waller pitched all nine innings for Anzar.

The Hawks have just one senior on the team, but she hasn’t even played yet because of cheer competition. Coach Waller expects Yolina Ponce to join the team this week.

“I think we have a good team, it is just a matter of getting some experience under our belt,” Waller said.

The Hawks will play at Pacific Grove on March 30.
