Hawks tie game in 75th minute, finish in 1-1 tie with Pacific
Collegiate
SAN JUAN BAUTISTA

Jocelyn Sicairos’ unassisted goal in the 75th minute was the equalizer Wednesday as the Anzar High girls soccer team tied visiting Pacific Collegiate 1-1 in San Juan Bautista, placing an added importance on the Feb. 6 rematch.

“It’ll be an interesting game when we go and visit them on the sixth,” Anzar head coach Albert Flores said. “PCS is definitely a high-caliber team.”

Wednesday’s match weighed heavily toward which team could take the Coastal Athletic League title at year’s end. Both Anzar and Pacific Collegiate came into the game with matching 2-0 records, and we’re the last remaining undefeated teams in league.

And that much remains the same after Wednesday’s match as well.

After the Pumas went up 1-nil within the first five minutes of play, the two teams went scoreless for the next 70 minutes.

“We had the ball,” Flores said of that 70-minute period. “We had one of our better games, even if we didn’t win it.”

But Sicairos’ unassisted goal, which she played off a rebound after PCS’ goalie failed to hold on to the ball – and just in the nick of time, no less – knotted the game at 1-all with just five minutes of play remaining.

“Overall,” Flores said, “just a great game played by everyone.”

Although official statistics were not provided, Flores commented on the play of keeper Erin Deleissegues.

“She made many excellent saves,” Flores said. “She had an awesome game.”

PCS (2-0-1 CAL, 4-4-1) will host Calvary Christian Friday, while Anzar (2-0-1 CAL, 2-3-2) will visit Gonzales. Game times are at 3:30 p.m.
