Anzar High middle blocker Kiely White has signed a letter of intent to play volleyball for Dominican University in San Rafael.
White, the co-captain of the Hawks volleyballl team that captured the Central Coast Section Division V championship last season, is expected to make an impact for the Penguins, who went 9-12 overall in 2002.
“Kiely will help us with our blocking right away. That was the weakest part of our game last season,” said Dominican coach Roger Goodwin, who took over the program in August of 2002. “We played good defense in the back row and had good ball control, but we didn’t block well. Kiely is as big as any player we had last season.”
The Penguins, who play in the Cal Pac Athletic Conference, will have eight new players recruited by Goodwin this season.
“We’re going to be rebuilding,” said Goodwin. “But we’ll have a year-round conditioning program. I’m bringing in some good, enthusiastic players.”
White initially contacted the school, showing interest. Goodwin requested a tape, then saw one of the Hawks’ CCS playoff games.
“I liked what I saw,” said Goodwin. “Then I saw her play for her club team and she fared well there, too. I wanted to see her in a different environment playing at a higher level. I got her to campus to see if it would be a good fit. Dominican is a small school and some girls want to go to a big school.”
“I really liked the campus,” said White. “Coach Goodwin is really nice, plus it’s close to home. I hope to be an asset to the team.”
White, a third team All-CCS selection, had offers from Marymount of Arlington, Va. plus some other smaller schools.
