Special to the Pinnacle

Aromas Day is coming soon, Sunday, August 30th and the kick-off is a country-style pancake breakfast and auction at the grange, 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. The street fair runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the parade starts at 2 p.m.

If you’re like me, and love original artwork, don’t miss the exhibits under the trees in the center of town. It’s not the same old, same old, and the prices are so much better than gallery prices. Meet the artists from the AROMAS HILLS ARTISANS, (AHA’s) and lose yourself in their beautiful creations.

As you stroll through the recently renovated park, the various artists will be happy to discuss their medias and methods with you. Be on the look-out for hand pulled prints, fabulous stained glass, oil paintings, ceramics, and photography. Or maybe you are interested in weaving, hand made jewelry, inlaid wooden boxes, gourds and wreaths.

Children and the young at heart will enjoy the petting zoo featuring farm animals such as chickens, ducks, little goats and bunnies. And, of course, there will be pony rides and Dan Chan the Magic Man.

Older children will want to tackle the Climbing Wall, the Dunk Tank and the Parade or just ride the free buckboard all over town. There will be enough hot dogs, cupcakes and snow cones to feed an army, not to mention barbecue from the two grocery stores. 4-H Youth will be selling popcorn, homemade jams, plants and planters.

One of the things that impressed me at last year’s festival was the display of Classic Cars and Tractors, real eye-candy. If you would like to reserve a booth, call Linda at 650-430-3353.

The Aromas Eagles, premier service club in Aromas, is the proud sponsor of Aromas Day. The Eagles, Aromas Hills Artisans (AHA’s), the Aromas Community Grange, Granite Rock and the Aromas 4-H will all contribute toward the free horse-drawn wagon rides which are guaranteed to send you back at least a hundred years in time.

Other contributors to Aromas Day are; the Art’s Council for Monterey, the Monterey County Board of Supervisors, the Community Foundation for Monterey County-Communities Advancing the Arts, funded by the James Irvine Foundation with additional funding from David and Lucile Packard Foundation.

The quaint little town of Aromas sits at the corners of three counties (Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Benito). Coming from Highway 1, Watsonville, take Highway 129 and turn right at the Rogge exit. From Highway 101, take Highway 129 and turn left on Rogge. Park in the lot on Marcus Street off of Aromas Road, and catch a free ride on the horse-drawn wagon into town.
