The Aromas Community Grange will present the Percolators at the inaugural Aromas Grange Scholarship Fund Benefit Contra Dance Saturday, June 14.

The event runs from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Aromas Grange hall at the corner of Rose and Bardue streets in Aromas. Admission is $10 per person. An optional beginner’s orientation is offered at 6:45 p.m. Proceeds will fund scholarships for local high school graduates.

The Percolators, featuring Laurie Rivin on Fiddle, Janet Dows on concertina and Paul Rangell on guitar and piano, will provide music.

Laurie Rivin has been a popular fiddler at Bay Area dances for more than 20 years. Along with The Percolators, Rivin has performed with the Moving Cloud Orchestra, Quebec Quasi, Professor Spicer’s Dance Tonic, and Les Tetes de Violon. She has studied French Canadian musical styles with master fiddlers in Quebec and has earned accolades for bringing that hearty style to contra dance venues.

Paul Rangell is known for his creative arrangements on piano and guitar and for his ability to meld diverse musical styles for dancing. He has performed for decades in a number of local bands.

Janet Dows rounds out the band’s exotic style on the concertina.

Calling will be Erik Hoffman, one of the most personable and sought-after contra dance callers in the United States.

There is no need to bring a dance partner, and all dances will be taught to interested attendees.

The Aromas Community Grange awards scholarships to several exceptional students each year in support of their continued education. The Grange sponsors contra dances the second Saturday of every month.
