The Aromas Library is sponsoring its third annual art contest for youths ages 10-18, and the work will be on display at the library beginning May 3.

The contest, which is open to anyone of the appropriate age, will be judged in three age categories: 10-12, 13-15 and 16-18. All mediums are acceptable, including watercolor, oil, acrylic, pencil, pastel, collage, photography, chalk or wood.

“We really would like to highlight the art of young people,” said library manager Jane Ward.

Last year, the library received about 200 entries, Ward said. Considering her branch is “very small,” she said “the library turns into an art gallery.”

“A lot of people come to see the art,” Ward said, “and we leave the art up until the summer begins. They love to see the youth art.”

She said the purpose is not only to encourage appreciation for art, but also it helps promote use of the library among the youth.

“This is a wonderful venue for showing their art,” she said.

The library sponsors several programs for children under the age of 10, Ward said, so the art contest creates a recreational opportunity for older kids.

Sponsors include the Aromas Youth Advisory Board and the Friends of the Aromas Library. The deadline for entries is April 18. For more information, call Ward at (831) 726-3240.
