Linda Bjornson, an Aromas stained glass artist, was recently named artist-in-residence at Pinnacles National Monument.

Bjornson’s appointment is part of a new program that coincides with the monument’s centennial celebration.

Bjornson will live and work in the park, interacting with the public as she depicts the park’s features and resources in glass. Plans call for her to provide talks about her art and her experiences in the park. Future residencies are being planned for spring of next year.

“We are excited to welcome Linda and the local art community into Pinnacles,” said Michael Rupp of the park staff. Rupp is coordinating the artist-in-residence program. “San Benito and Monterey counties are blessed with a diverse and talented artist base, and working with them to showcase Pinnacles is a win-win situation. In true centennial fashion, the program commences this year, but it is hoped to continue on for years to come.”

Residencies last about two weeks, with the artist producing a few pieces of original work, depending on the medium. The program will ultimately involve several art councils, guilds and galleries in the process of selecting artists and providing locations for display of their work. The goal, Rupp said, is to create a base of stewards who can further the park’s mission through their art.

In coordination with the artist-in-residence program, Galeria Tonantzin in San Juan Bautista is hosting a Pinnacles art show through Oct. 12. An artists’ reception is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 11, which coincides with the Condor Classic benefit bike ride and the San Juan Bautista gallery walk.

Artists are encouraged to apply for future residencies. Further information, applications and details on the submittal process are available at www.nps.gov/pinn/parkmgmt/air.htm.
