Discovery of asbestos and contaminated soil at the former Leatherback Industries site has added $130,000 to the cost for the Hollister Redevelopment Agency, bringing the total contract cost to $401,000.

Hollister City Council members last week approved the supplemental appropriation of $130,000 toward the demolition project, contracted to Pantano Excavating. The original contract from July 2009 was for $234,000, but city officials in February added $37,000 to the cost for removal of “various concrete structures” and the disposal of hazardous waste oil, according to a staff report.

The city’s RDA about three years ago bought the former Leatherback site near downtown Hollister after the company closed its doors.

Hollister officials have expressed interest in partnering with a builder to develop the site, with part of it used by the YMCA of San Benito County as its future home.
