The San Benito girls soccer team was able to put away visiting Monterey 5-1 with three goals in the second half Thursday afternoon.

San Benito (2-1-1) was up just 2-1 at halftime against Monterey (1-3) but was able to dominate the game, outshooting the Toreadors 28-4.

“We’re still working on shot execution,” said Baler coach Mike Schurig. “We’re also working on passing and on ball control.”

Rose Vandenberg returned to action for the Balers this week after competing in southern California over Thanksgiving week.

“We actually gave her yesterday off because she had six straight days of soccer and travelling,” Schurig said. “She is still getting her legs back.”

Vandenberg had one goal in the game and two assists. She almost scored a second goal in the final minutes of the game, coming up with several nice moves to get around her defenders.

Schurig had to do some switching of his lineup without Julie Broyer, Felicia Fretas and Jill Merrigan, who is out after surgery.

“We’re building right now with eight new players,” Schurig said. “We have only four starting defenders, so we don’t have strong subs for our defense.”

The one goal the Balers allowed came on a defensive breakdown.

“They are also still trying to get used to the flat back as opposed to the sweeper,” Schurig said. “Sometimes our sweeper would get beat, so I would rather that they play with someone who is always conscious to back the person up. They are always thinking in twos this way.”

Jenny Maheu got the Balers on the board first with an unassisted goal about 10 minutes into the game. After Monterey tied the game shortly before the half, Maheu scored off an assist from Vandenberg.

The Balers came out quick in the second half with a goal from Brittany Huth on an assist by Vandenberg. The final two goals were scored by Maheu from an assist by Chantel Guajardo and by Vandenburg unassisted.

The Balers will play at Burlingame on Saturday then head to Harbor High on Tuesday.
