San Benito finishes second behind Live Oak in TCAL Finals
MORGAN HILL –– The San Benito swim teams knew that they would have to swim the meet of the season if they were to defeat Live Oak for the second year in a row in the Tri-County Athletic League Finals on Saturday in Morgan Hill.
But despite several first-place finishes, the Haybalers finished second in the league standings behind Live Oak, who was their only league loss.
Several of the Balers will compete in the Central Coast Section playoffs this weekend. The trials will be held Friday, and the finals will be Saturday. Both will be at Independence High School in San Jose.
“I was pretty confident coming in that we would be able to finish in second place,” said boys coach Leif Nordstrom. “But I was hoping to put a little more of a sting into Live Oak. I was happy overall with how we did. We have been doing a two-week taper, so they are not at their peak yet.”
The boys best event was the 400-yard free style event in which they finished second behind Live Oak by about two seconds. The 200-yard relay teams, which have been the strength of the Balers this season, finished in third and fourth place.
“We had some pretty good 100 freestyle swimmers,” Nordstrom said. “They had a little more rest before the 400 than they had for the 200 freestyle.”
The 400 relay team was one of three Baler teams to be touched out. Christian Smith, in the 500 free, and Blane Curtis, in the 100 free, also came in second.
David Smith posted a CCS-qualifying time in the 200 IM for the first time this season with a mark of 2:10.16, which was about six seconds faster than his previous best. He was the only Baler on either the boys or girls team to secure a CCS berth during the meet.
“That was totally unexpected because we had been working all year to get him to qualify in the 100 back,” Nordstrom said.
Although David Smith got his foot caught briefly in one of the gutters, costing him a couple seconds, he still managed to finish in second place in the backstroke event with a time of 1:01.26. A 1:00.49 is needed for CCS.
Curtis, a freshman, just missed qualifying for CCS in a couple events.
Seniors Christian Smith and Robbie Shattuck both won their events for the second year in a row – Smith the 50 freestyle and Shattuck the 100 breaststroke.
Live Oak’s Ronnie Gautschi touched out Shattuck but was disqualified, giving Shattuck the victory.
“We knew we had to try our hardest to beat them,” said senior Stacy Lass. “I think we are happy with second place. Our whole swim team had a good performance.”
Both San Benito 200-yard girls relay teams finished in first place; however, the 200-yard free relay team was the beneficiary of a Live Oak disqualification because a player had jewelry on. The teams were led by Lass, Erin Reed, Kat Adamek and Juliana Sih.
Lass and Sih also turned in strong individual performances as well. After finishing third in the in the 500-yard freestyle, Lass edged Live Oak’s Ronni Gautschi by almost two seconds in the 100-yard backstroke event to win.
“I didn’t want anyone to finish ahead of me,” Lass said. “And I didn’t want anyone to beat my record from last year.”
Last year, Lass had a time of 1:02.75 in the backstroke.
Sih won the 100-yard breaststroke by about three seconds over Susan Suchomel of Live Oak.
