The San Benito girls basketball team won a tight 41-35 game against Castilleja (6-3) in the first round of the Oak Grove tournament Monday.

San Benito (5-1) will continue play Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. against Independence, who the Balers beat 44-32 earlier in the season.

“I told the girls they had two players who scored all their points,” said Baler coach Tom Dean. “If we could shut down one of those girls, we would win.”

Mika Peterman had 28 points, but Nikki Perlman was limited to just one and fouled out.

“Peterman is a great shooter,” Dean said. “I was very impressed with her shooting. But as I tell the girls, it takes a team to win not just one player.”

The Balers shot 40 percent from the field (13 for 35), and the team was 57 percent from the free-throw line (13 for 23). The Balers had 21 rebounds, eight assists, 10 steals and four blocked shots.

“We had a good team victory, and I feel we won it with our defense,” Dean said.

Ashley Patton had a great game on defense at her 3-guard position. She had two steals and a blocked shot. Jamie Hall had six rebounds, a blocked shot and eight points.

Dani Andrewson was in the Castilleja’s guards faces the whole second half, helping to force four shot clock violations.

Mallorie Wilson had 12 points, three rebounds and a blocked shot. Denise Simens, Kristina Leal and Andee Walton came in and each had a very timely basket. Cortney Almaguer was strong inside with three rebounds.

Jaime Flores had five points – two of which were in the final moments at the free-throw line.

“I told one of the players when Jaime went to the line ‘if she makes these we win’ and she canned them both,” Dean said.

Trisha Lee had eight points and made four free throws at the end of the game to help ice the win.

Frosh note: Lavon Silguero was named All-Tourney for the Notre Dame tourney and Carly Brigantino was named All-Tourney at Presentation for the Baler freshman team, which is 5-5.
